Why does my converter mix up debit and credit columns?

Because most converters decide column boundaries by guessing from the text, and in a statement the debit and credit amounts sit so close together that one guess can merge or swap them. The fix is to check the column types yourself before exporting, which Satr's preview lets you do.

What goes wrong

Public bug reports for table-extraction tools describe withdrawal and deposit columns collapsing into one, headers taken from a small summary table instead of the transaction table, and layouts that shift between statement versions. Generic tools are least reliable exactly where the money columns are.

How Satr reads the columns

Satr finds transaction rows by their date patterns, merges text into cells by horizontal position, and takes column boundaries from the lines that contain a date and an amount. You then set each column as Date, Description, Debit, Credit, Amount, Balance, Text or Ignore. Negatives written with a minus, brackets or a trailing minus are recognised.

A quick correctness check

Pick two or three rows and compare them with the original. Then check that opening balance plus credits minus debits equals the closing balance, or that each Balance value follows from the previous one. If a row fails, change the column type in the preview and look again.

Limits

Satr works with text PDFs downloaded from internet or mobile banking. It does not read scans or photos (no OCR), it uses a generic parser with no per-bank templates so you may need to set the column types yourself, and it is not affiliated with any bank. Check the result against your original statement before you use it.

Fix mixed-up debit and credit columns

  2. Look at the column headersFind the money columns in the preview.
  3. Set the typesMark each as Debit, Credit, Amount or Balance.
  4. ReconcileCompare two or three rows and the balance with the original, then export.

Questions

Why are my amounts in a single column?

The converter treated Debit and Credit as one column. In Satr, split or re-assign the column type in the preview, or use one signed Amount column if that is how your statement is laid out.

Can the converter tell debit from credit automatically?

Satr uses the column position and the header words where they exist, but a generic parser can be wrong on unusual layouts. That is why the preview and the column mapper exist.

My bank shows negatives with brackets. Is that fine?

Yes. Minus signs, brackets and trailing minus signs are all recognised as negative.

How do I know the export is complete?

Check the row count and the total row in the preview against the statement, and reconcile the balance.
